This does seems to be a widespread problem and I agree that had I enabled 2FA it would have made my account more secure however, similar to you, although having an account for more than 10 years I hadn’t been using it frequently for the last 2 at least other than my professional pages. Rather foolishly in retrospect I’d missed the 2FA update.

Thanks too for mentioning that your email may have been compromised. I am also investigating this line of inquiry as my email host has reported a glitch, although has yet to report a breach, that occurred around the same time. The more I consider how this takeover of my FB account could have happened the possibility that my email may have been compromised seems more likely. Fortunately I use different passwords on key accounts and so far nothing else appears to have been breached.
