As the pink minority in a dual heritage (English/Ghanaian) family I can relate to these experiences as well as the differences in the same resorts when in combinations of: my family without me, my family with me, and me on my own. The interactions are often very different and this is also true when we’re in England.
Friendly curiosity is fine but it does upset me that my family are treated differently, and often not in a good way, when I’m not present.
There’s so much to unpack here that I hardly know where to start. It’s also hard, coming from a melanin-deprived perspective, to get my head around this as a father to my daughters & why these differences exist in 2017.
That said, teenage boys on holiday seem to come in a universal standard when it comes to trying to get the attention of my teenage daughter 😝
